A GST invoice that passes, without the software
A GST invoice is not a receipt with a tax line bolted on. It is a document the law describes field by field, and an invoice missing one of those fields is the kind of problem that surfaces months later, during a reconciliation, when the buyer cannot claim the credit and calls you about it. This free GST invoice generator exists because the alternative — a billing subscription, or a spreadsheet template that quietly gets the tax split wrong — is a bad trade for a shop issuing a handful of invoices a week.
The rule that catches everybody: CGST and SGST, or IGST
There is one decision on a GST invoice that people get wrong more than all the others combined, and it is not a hard rule — it is just easy to forget. Tax splits into CGST and SGST, half the rate each, when the place of supply is inside your own state. It is charged as a single IGST line at the full rate when the place of supply is another state. Same total, completely different invoice, and the buyer’s credit depends on which one you printed.
The trap is that place of supply is not always where the customer lives. For goods it generally follows where the goods end up. A Bengaluru shop billing a Bengaluru walk-in charges CGST plus SGST; the same shop shipping the same item to Chennai charges IGST. This tool asks for both states and then stops asking you to think about it — set the place of supply and the invoice re-splits itself.
What the generator fills in for you
Every field Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists has a place here: your name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive invoice number and its date; the buyer’s details and their GSTIN where they are registered; HSN or SAC per line; description, quantity and unit; taxable value after discount; the rate and the amount of tax; place of supply; whether reverse charge applies; and room for a signature. Beyond the legal minimum it also does the arithmetic that gets fumbled by hand — the per-slab tax summary, the round-off line, and the amount in words in the Indian system, so ₹1,25,050 reads as Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand and Fifty Only.
GSTIN validation, because a typo costs a month
The fifteenth character of a GSTIN is a checksum over the first fourteen. Most invoice templates never look at it, so a transposed digit sails through and is caught by the portal weeks later, after the return is filed. This generator recomputes the check character as you type. If it flags a number, there is a genuine typo in it — that warning is arithmetic, not a guess.
Money is counted in paise, not in decimals
Under the hood every amount is an integer number of paise. That sounds fussy until you have watched a spreadsheet produce a total that is one paisa off and then argued about it with a customer who is holding a calculator. Tax is computed per line, the CGST and SGST halves are split so they always re-sum to the exact tax charged, and only the final payable is rounded to the rupee — with the adjustment shown as its own line rather than absorbed silently.
Nothing is uploaded, and nothing needs an account
There is no server call in this tool. The invoice is assembled in your browser and the PDF is produced by your browser’s own print engine, which is why it works on a slow connection and keeps working if this site is having a bad day. Your business details — name, GSTIN, address, bank and UPI — are remembered in your browser’s local storage so you do not retype them for the next invoice, and the Reset button clears them. Your customers’ names and amounts are never stored at all.
Making it part of a working day
One invoice is a form. A hundred invoices is a different problem: which ones are still unpaid, who was reminded, what a customer’s running balance is, and which items are moving. That is the shape of the credit register — the udhar khata — that Indian shops have kept on paper for generations, and it is where a free generator honestly stops being enough. When you get there, DueSetu keeps the customer, the sale and the pending balance together and lets the customer pay by UPI from a link. Until then, this page will make you a correct invoice as many times as you need it, for free.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GST invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark, and there is no limit on how many invoices you make. Everything runs in your browser — the invoice never leaves your device.
When does an invoice need CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
It depends only on the place of supply. If the place of supply is the same state your business is registered in, the tax splits into CGST and SGST at half the rate each. If it is a different state, the whole rate is charged as IGST. This generator picks the right one automatically as soon as you set both states.
What has to appear on a GST tax invoice?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists it: your name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive invoice number and date; the buyer’s name, address and GSTIN if they are registered; the HSN or SAC code; a description, quantity and unit; the taxable value; the rate and amount of tax; the place of supply; whether reverse charge applies; and a signature. This generator has a field for each of them.
Do I need to put an HSN code on every invoice?
The number of HSN digits required depends on your turnover, and businesses under the threshold that are supplying to registered buyers still have to show it. It is simplest to always fill it in — an invoice with an HSN code is never wrong for lacking one.
Can I use this if my business is not GST-registered?
You should not raise a tax invoice or collect GST without a GSTIN. Leave the tax rate at 0% and use it as a plain bill of supply instead — the layout, totals and amount in words all still work.
How do I save the invoice as a PDF?
Press Download PDF. That opens your browser’s print dialog — choose "Save as PDF" as the destination. The page is styled so only the invoice prints, with no form, menu or buttons on the page.
Does my data get uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server call in this tool at all. Your business details are kept in your own browser’s local storage so you do not retype them next time, and you can clear them with the Reset button.
What is the check character at the end of a GSTIN?
The fifteenth character is a checksum over the first fourteen. It exists so a mistyped GSTIN is caught immediately rather than by the portal weeks later. This tool verifies it, so a red warning here almost always means a genuine typo.
Why is there a round-off line on the invoice?
Tax on each line is calculated to the paise, so the total rarely lands on a whole rupee. The invoice rounds the payable amount to the nearest rupee and shows the adjustment as its own line, which is what the rules expect — the amount is adjusted, never quietly absorbed.
Can I put my logo on the invoice?
Yes. Add a logo image and it appears in the top-left of the printed invoice. Like everything else, it stays in your browser and is embedded only into the PDF you generate.
What invoice number should I use?
GST requires a consecutive serial number, unique within the financial year, of at most 16 characters. A prefix plus a running count works well, for example INV/2026-27/001. The generator increments the trailing number for you after each invoice.
Does this handle reverse charge?
There is a reverse-charge toggle, and switching it on prints "Tax payable on reverse charge: Yes" on the invoice as required. The tax arithmetic itself is unchanged — under reverse charge the recipient pays the tax to the government rather than to you.
Can I bill in fractional quantities like 1.5 kg?
Yes. Quantity accepts decimals, and the unit column carries the standard UQC codes such as KGS, LTR, MTR and NOS.
Will this work on a phone?
Yes, it is built mobile-first. The item rows stack on a small screen and the printed invoice keeps its full-width layout regardless of the device you made it on.
